A tournament to decide, once and for all, Texas high school football's best mascot.

We're past one round of the tournament to decide, once and for all, the best mascot in Texas high school football...and who would've thought it would generate such a response?

The Dave Campbell's Texas Football Mascot Madness Tournament just finished the first round, so we're down to our final 16 mascots. The second half of the first round was as tight as it could be (and with more than 10,000 votes again). You can see the results in the bracket (which you can see here), but here's what happened:

Port Lavaca Calhoun Sand Crabs def. El Paso Del Valle Conquistadores, 78% to 22%
Mason Punchers def. Robstown Cotton Pickers, 50.1% to 49.9%
Rocksprings Angoras def. Garland Christian Swordsmen, 58% to 42%
Cameron Yoe Yoemen def. Frost Polar Bears, 56% to 44%
Roscoe Plowboys def. CC John Paul II Centurions, 81% to 19%
Itasca Wampus Cats def. Harlingen Military Academy Leathernecks, 68% to 32%
New Braunfels Unicorns def. Houston Sharpstown Apollos, 75% to 25%
Hamlin Pied Pipers def. Coleman Bluecats, 68% to 32%

Check out that Mason-Robstown score. There were more than 1,500 votes cast in that match, and it was separated by -- I'm not kidding -- seven votes. SEVEN VOTES! So yes, your vote really does matter.

Here's the schedule of voting from here on out:

Today: Round of 16
May 14: Round of 8
May 16: Round of 4
May 20: Final Round
May 23: Winner announced

Without further ado, let's continue voting. You can vote below on the eight second-round matchups in the DCTF Mascot Madness Tournament.

May the best mascot win!
